Text: Amos 5:21-24
Memory verse:
”Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.“ Hebrews 12:28 NKJV
God is the best employer of labour. Even though it’s our responsibility to serve Him, having saved us, yet He still pays us for serving Him and His interest. However, it is important to know that not all services are accepted or rewarded by Him.
”… let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.“ (Heb 12:28).
He will only reward the service that He accepts. We have examples of people whose services were rejected by God, such as Canaan, the son of Ham; Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron; King Saul, and so forth. Eloquence, skill, power, and gifts may win men’s favour but may be repulsed by God.
Now, let’s consider two things today that will make our services acceptable to God.
Firstly, all services must be offered in the spirit of holiness. He, whose eyes are too holy to behold iniquities, can not embrace services offered in sin (Hab 1:13). God takes it as disrespect and dishonour to His person when His children deliberately serve Him with such attitude. God is not only interested in the service offered but the life of the offerer. ”Take away from Me the noise of your songs, For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.“ (Amos 5:23).
Secondly, services must be offered in love. God, who is love, will never accept any service that is offered outside love. In fact, He describes such services as emptiness, useless, and unprofitable. Talents or gifts, treasures, or time that is not served in love is nothing, and the offerer is not in the least rewarded (1 Cor 13:2-3). Jesus clearly warned that charitable deeds done without love may only be rewarded by men and not by God. “When you do good deeds, don’t try to show off. If you do, you won’t get a reward from your Father in heaven” (Matt 6:1 CEV).
Friends, don’t just serve God. Seek to make your service pleasing and acceptable to God. May you not lose your reward in Jesus’ name.
Prayer points
1. Father, please, help me to serve You in holiness, reverence, and with love, in Jesus’ name.
2. Father, purge me of anything that can cause me to lose the reward of serving You, in Jesus’ name.
Today’s declarations
1. I am more concerned about impressing God in my service than impressing man.
2. God’s work done in God’s way will never go unrewarded.
