Text: Colossians 2:1-7
Memory verse:
“rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:7 NKJV
On a visit to my hometown sometimes ago, for a church service, I observed that I didn’t see one of my uncles in the church. So later in the day, when I had a reason to visit him, I asked why he wasn’t in the church service, and he told me confidently that he had stopped going to church. He claimed that he had felt so overwhelmed with the troubles of life and had concluded that God hadn’t been fair to him. In other words, he felt disappointed in God.
Whatever your reason may be, walking away from God will do you no good. Rather, people who do such always end up having their lives and conditions become worse. This is what David asserted, “Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god..” (Psa 16:4). May you never take a step that will worsen your condition in Jesus’ name. In some cases, you will see uninvited helpers in trying to empathize with the afflicted advice such to try other gods. A sister who was experiencing delay in finding a marriage partner once told me how she was rejected by her parents because she refused to take their advice to use a fetish perfume used to attract men.
The truth is that if God doesn’t help you, anyone or any god, who promises to help you wants to destroy you (2Kings 6:27). The devil usually attracts with baits. It looks attractive but deadly; it tastes sweet but poisonous! That was how he got the first Adam. “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took off its fruit and ate. She also gave her husband with her, and he ate.” (Gen 3:6).
I love the approach of Job when he was surprised by his sudden misfortune. Even with the troubles, he resolved, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. …” (Job 13:15).
Friends, your Christianity is still shaking, as long as you haven’t seen God as your last bus stop or if you haven’t seen Jesus as ‘the Way’ instead of, ‘one of the ways’. If you see Him as your last bus stop or the only way, then you will remain ‘stuck’ there even when it appears as if nothing is working rather than considering other alternatives. Knowing this truth is to be established in the faith just as Paul prayed (Col 2:6-7). And may you be rooted and built up in Christ and be established in the faith in Jesus’ name.
Prayer points
1. Father, I pray that You will cause me to be rooted and built up in Christ and be established in the faith in Jesus’ name.
2. Father, please, let no affliction or anything, be able to separate me from You in Jesus’ name.
Today’s declarations
1. Departing from the faith is not an option because God is my last bus stop, and Jesus is the only way.
2. I know that I am finished if God doesn’t help me since He is my only help.
