Text: 2 Cor. 2:10-11
Memory verse:
”lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.“
II Corinthians 2:11 NKJV
In any contest, each contestant seeks to take advantage of the weaknesses of the opponent to gain a point and to win. This is also the aim of the devil in his fight against the believers. He doesn’t fight you in the area of your strength but in the area of your weaknesses and especially the weaknesses that you are ignorant of or which you don’t pay attention to.
”lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.“ (II Cor 2:11). The Message Bible describes it as “an opening”.
The tale behind’ Achilles’ Heel’ goes back to ancient Greek myths. Achilles was a hero of the Trajan War, who was known as being the greatest of all the Greek warriors. It was believed that Achilles, the great warrior of Troy, was invincible in battle, or so it seemed. His mother, a sea-nymph named Thetis, dipped him into the river Styx when he was an infant. This magical river was said to offer the power of invulnerability. But she held him by his heel as she submerged him, leaving that one spot untouched by the waters of the protective river. He became invulnerable in all of his body except for this one heel. Despite his strength and courage, it was this unprotected heel that became Achilles’ downfall.
Thus, Achilles’ heel is the point of weakness that can lead to downfall. Lust for women brought the fall of Samson. Saul, the first king of Israel, died in jealousy and insecurity! Judas lost his position and office because of covetousness, which is idolatry. “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us” (Heb 12:1)
What is your own Achilles’ heel? What is that weakness that is being shielded from the public by your talent, gift, or outlook but is secretly eating you up? Pay attention to it today. Don’t leave it unprotected. The weakness that you tolerate today will ultimately destroy you. Saul tolerated the Amalekite, which he was commanded to utterly destroy, and he was eventually killed by an Amalekite!
