Memory verse:
“And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.”
Luke 2:16
Signs are given not only to stop all doubts but to eliminate all possible confusion. It’s a mark by which persons or things are distinguished and made known. For over seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus, the Christ, God, through prophet Isaiah, had already given the virgin birth as a sign to look out for in identifying the promised Messiah (Isa 9:7). After birth, God, through His angel, announced to the shepherds, the birth of the promised Saviour, Christ and the Lord in the city of David and gave the sign that will mark Him out among other babies who were born at that time and in that chity. It may be difficult to trace the birth history of the baby to know if He was of a virgin birth or not and within the brief visit of the shepherds. So, God gave an instant sign to mark out the baby and to remove all doubts. “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”” (Luke 2:11-12). The manger was the sign and not the wrapped swaddling cloths. They may be able to see new born babies wrapped with swaddling cloths but not in a manger. Not even the poorest birth will be in a feeding trough (the manger)! God chose the most humbling birth to reveal the Saviour (the deliverer of His people), Messiah (the anointed one) and the Lord (the Sovereign master)! Unimaginable indeed! Coming from the highest to the lowest! Humility is the way of salvation, the way of exaltation and the way of Christ. It’s the true mark of a Christian!
