Text: I Samuel 25:23-39

“The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.” I Samuel‬ ‭25‬:‭3‬

A beautiful woman will make a beautiful wedding but a wise woman will make a beautiful marriage. King Solomon learnt this lesson very late in life. Having tried different things and examined different women, about 700 wives and 300 concubines from both Israel and foreign nations, he came to this conclusion. “Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.” ‭‭(Prov 31‬:‭30‬ MSG).
What then should a man desire in a woman? “Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the Lord.” (‭‭Prov‬ ‭19‬:‭14‬). A prudent wife is a wise, understanding and sensible woman. The fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom. (Prov‬ ‭1:7; 9‬:‭10‬). See a woman that fears God, then you see a wise and understanding woman. A wise woman fears, reverences and obeys God readily but a fool despises God’s instructions. The Hebrew word, ‘sakal’, used for ‘prudent’ in the Bible is the same word used in Joshua 1:8. for ‘good success’. You can’t have a wise woman as a wife and not be successful except you are a ‘Nabal’! A Nabal is a fool and will always despise and reject counsel. A wise woman is a fountain of wisdom in your house. She will give you right counsel that will lead you to safety and encourage you at down times. Such was Abigail to David but whom Nabal despised. See how she exhibited great wisdom, spoke the language of David and intercepted him on his revenge and blood mission! (1 Sam 25:29). Notice how these qualities were highlighted in our memory text. Abigail was first of all, good, understanding and then, beautiful in appearance. Wisdom and understanding make a woman truly beautiful. Therefore, a woman that fears the Lord is wise, understanding and truly beautiful. Her beauty is lasting and not passing!
May God gift all His unmarried young men with prudent wives in Jesus name.

1. Father, let our daughters be devoted to Your fear and make them wise, understanding and beautiful in Jesus name.
2. Father, please gift all our unmarried singles with prudent wives in Jesus name.
