COMMUNION: THE SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING

COMMUNION: THE SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING

Text: Luke 22:14-20
Memory verse:
”The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?“ ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

The Holy Communion or the Lord’s table is also called the “Eucharist”. The word “thanks” used throughout the New Testament is the Greek word, “eucharisteo”, from which “Eucharist” is derived. Thus, the communion is a service of thanksgiving: thanking God for the greatest gift and sacrifice ever made.
According to our text today, Jesus broke bread and shared wine with His disciples before His crucifixion. He gave thanks as He took the wine, which is symbolic of His blood, and as He broke the bread, which is symbolic of His body.
Now, why should the communion generate thanksgiving in us?
Firstly, it reminds us that we share the life and blessings of Christ. Any time you partake in the communion, you share all the benefits in the body and the blood of Christ. “…that all who drink it are sharing together the blessing of Christ’s blood? … we are sharing together the benefits of his body.” (1 Cor 10:16 TLB).
Secondly, it is a table of exchange. Every time you share in the Lord’s Table, He gives you His health and takes away your pains, weaknesses, sicknesses, and diseases. Jesus lived a healthy, strong, and vibrant life on earth. However, before and during His crucifixion, His healthy body was broken. He gave you His health while He took away your troubles ‭‭(Isa 53:4; Matt‬ ‭8‬:‭17)
“…and by His stripes we are healed”(Isa 53:5).
Now, at the communion table, you give thanks for your healing and announce your victory over pains, weaknesses, sicknesses, and diseases. ”and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.“ ‭‭(I Cor‬ ‭11‬:‭24‬). His body was broken for my healing! Hallelujah!
Thirdly, at the communion table, you thank God for your forgiveness through His blood (Heb 9:22; Eph 1:7). You now have access to the presence and into all the blessings of the covenant. You have been justified and no longer under any curse or condemnation. No one can lay a charge against you anymore, not even the devil. ”For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.“ ‭‭(Matt‬ ‭26‬:‭28‬).
Friends, the communion is your supernatural meal to live the supernatural life in this broken world. Hallelujah!
