When a believer continues to ignore the rebukes of his conscience for his wrong conduct, his conscience will gradually lose its sensitivity until he begins to sin willfully and without feeling uncomfortable. This is what 1 Timothy 4:2 says āThey will also be fooled by the false claims of liars whose consciences have lost all feelingā (CEV). Their āconsciences have lost all feelingsā. This is what King James Version qualifies as āseared conscienceā, .
In this condition, the conscience is suppressed or dead, and the intuition is dulled by sins. This is a fallen state. The more spiritual a person is, the keener his conscience is. This is because a spiritual man doesnāt cover up sins in any form but thoroughly confesses and addresses them as soon as his conscience points them out to him. No other spiritual virtues or labour can substitute for the sensitivity of the conscience.
The sensitivity of the conscience can increase or decrease. A believer who allows his conscience to work will become sharper and sharper in sensitivity; his window will become brighter and brighter.
However, if a believer keeps ignoring the voice of the conscience or using reasoning and good deeds to substitute for obeying the voice of his conscience, the conscience will eventually stop speaking. The voice will keep going down and down until it disappears. When it gets to this point, he will begin to rationalize the sins he once passionately hated and will have no desire to overcome them.
As the first King of Israel, God continually gave Saul direction, through prophet Samuel but was consistently disobedient and unrepentant until he crashed spiritually; he got to the point where he couldnāt hear God through any means. His conscience had been deaden by his consistent sins. He lost all spiritual feelings to the extent that he didnāt feel uncomfortable consulting the mediums and spiritists whom he once banned from Israel. Even when the medium was afraid, Saul emboldened her in her sinful act! What a fall!
Friends, to prevent spiritual degradation and an ultimate fall, you must always listen and promptly respond to the voice of your conscience.
