Text: Colossians 2:4-10
Memory verse:
“rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
Colossians 2:7
Augustine Hippo states, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” This is the message which the author of this great hymn, ‘My faith has found a resting place’, Eliza E. Hewitt presents. Eliza retired as a public school teacher, having suffered from a severe spinal injury after being struck with a slate by one of her students. Thereafter, she continued as a Sunday school teacher and also in writing of hymns.
No soul has a resting place until this matter is settled. “And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!” (I Cor 15:17). Christ suffered, died and rose again (1 Cor 15:3-4). This is the gospel and what you are called to put your faith on and not on reasoning or human philosophy. You need to be assured of and established in it. When the great Christian and scientist, Sir Michael Faraday, was dying, some journalists questioned him as to his speculations about life after death. “Speculations!” he said, “I know nothing about speculations. I’m resting on certainties. ‘I know that my Redeemer liveth, and because He lives, I shall live also.”
Friends, your eternal salvation will not depend on whether you are a church card holder or holder of a theology certificate but on whether you have put your trust on the finished work of Christ and continuing in it. Your salvation is by grace through faith and will be saved in the same way. You can’t earn or achieve it. Let no challenge ever cause you to doubt but boldly declare your faith as you sing this hymn.
1 My faith has found a resting place,
from guilt my soul is freed;
I trust the ever-living One,
his wounds for me shall plead.
Refrain:
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea,
it is enough that Jesus died,
and that he died for me.
2. Enough for me that Jesus saves,
this ends my fear and doubt;
a sinful soul, I come to him,
he’ll never cast me out. [Refrain]
Prayer points
1. Father, thank you for assuring me of eternal salvation as I continue to put my faith in the finished work of Christ.
2. Father, let me continue to rest in You and never to doubt Your works in my life in Jesus name.
Today’s declarations
1. My sins are forgiven and my faith is not in vain because Jesus is risen.
2. My heart is at rest because I rest in Jesus.
