Text: John 1:1-9
Memory verse:
“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
John 1:4 NKJV
Have you ever experienced a situation where you found yourself in gross darkness and you had to search for a lamp to get light out of the darkness? So was the situation of Nicodemus, who came seeking for the Light in the night, in the midst of gross darkness.
“This man came to Jesus by night ….” (John 3:2).
Aside from the natural night, night is a metaphor of moral and spiritual darkness in the scriptures.
“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:4-5).
There is darkness in every man and it is the life that comes from Jesus that lightens. Until that happens, the human race continues to live in darkness (John 1:9).
Generally, darkness stands for sin, evil, moral corruption and death in the world. It describes ignorance, lack of understanding and the shameful things done by men in the world. Proverbs 4:19 warns, “But the path of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.”
Darkness paints the spiritual blindness that can only be overcome by the light of Christ.
To come to Jesus is to come to the Light, to escape condemnation and stumbling, which come upon everyone in the world. In contrast, to depart from Jesus is to come from the Light into darkness, condemnation and stumbling. While Nicodemus came from darkness to the Light, Judas went out of the Light into darkness. “Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.” (John 13:30). The most terrible thing that can ever happen to a person is to come out of the Light and go back to darkness, after having experienced the Light (Heb 6:4; 10:26-27). May that never be your portion in Jesus’ name.
Nicodemus truly saw the Light and was transformed. He continued in the Light and the darkness of the world couldn’t extinguish the Light in Him. In the midst of antagonism, Nicodemus stood for the defense of Jesus (John 7:50-51). He also identified with Jesus after His death (John 19:39-40). He became known as the one “who came to Jesus by night”, to let us know that he actually came out of darkness to the Light.
Friends, have you also come out of darkness into the Light? Can people testify of you that you have been transformed?
