Text: John 4:31-39
Memory verse:
”Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.“
John 4:34 NKJV
Aside from completion or accomplishment, which is used to describe what it means to fulfill one’s ministry, another idea is to be ‘fully convinced’ or ‘completely assured’. According to our text, you see this demonstrated in the way Jesus pressed to bring the word to the Samaritan woman such that His disciples marvelled. He was so assured of His purpose that He gave up His convenience.
It is being vigorously sure-footed. Paul, an older minister, was saying to his son, a young minister, ‘make your ministry a fully convinced one’. That is, to finish or to complete your divine assignment, you must give yourself to long-term unwavering commitment to the word. You must not be distracted by the disinterest, compromise and inconsistency of the hearers. You must preach the unadulterated word of God whether acceptable or attractive to the people or not; whether convenient or inconvenient to you. Your conviction about your service or task must make you endure hardship, opposition , persecution and rejection of men.
”Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.“ (II Tim 4:2).
To be surefooted means to stand firm, to stand strong, to be convinced of where to go and when to go there, to be assured of what to do, and when to do it. This is critical to any individual who will succeed in life. This is what David means here, ”He makes my feet like the feet of deer, And sets me on my high places.“
(Psa 18:33).
According to 2 Timothy 4:5, Paul provides a four part charge to his young son. The first two have to do with his inward disposition, which are paramount to a successful ministry. No one will complete his or her divine assignment without paying attention to these two. He warned that he must be watchful in all things and not in some things. He must keep his head in all situations. Secondly, he must endure hardship. He must be tough and strong. The second part of the admonition has to do with his actions or his work. He charged him to do the work of an evangelist and discharge all the duties of his ministry.
Friends, your disposition or your character will lay the foundation for a fulfilled ministry. Be well assured of your God-given assignment, pay attention to your character and then go fully to work.
