GOOD OR BAD ATTITUDES 3

GOOD OR BAD ATTITUDES 3

Text: 1 King 2:19
Memory verse:
“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 NKJV

I have discovered that attitude is best taught from the home. Although education, environment, and exposure may affect one’s attitude but the home is the foundation for the training. I have seen children from very poor parents and highly remote environments who are very rude and disrespectful. Ironically, I have also seen children from wealthy homes and from civilized societies who are very respectful. Thus, wealth and civilization can’t be the cause of the loss of attitude in our days.
Susanna Wesley, the mother of John and Charles Wesley, is acclaimed as a model of a godly mother. It was said that she did not want her children to be educated ruffians, so she methodically taught them manners and obedience. They remained silent at the dinner table, played only with carefully selected companions, and they were taught to use English precisely and respectfully. Manners are taught!
Let’s consider two lessons from our main text. Firstly is the respect that Bathsheba gave Solomon. Even though Solomon was her son, she respected his office, and rather than making a demand in her request, she sought his favour. Not many women will act this way. She was a respectful woman, and she would have trained Solomon in his childhood days to respect parents and constituted authorities likewise.
This is seen in the second lesson. Even though Solomon was a king of a whole nation and was seated on his throne, on sighting his mother, he rose up from his throne, walked up to meet her, bowed down to her, and ordered that a throne be brought for her and made her sit on his right hand! Wow! Power and exaltation didn’t erase his manners! What an honour! Humility indeed! No wonder he said, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Prov 22:6).
I get sad when I see people today who have no respect, both for the elderly and constituted authorities. Social media has become an avenue to exhibit this lack of manners. Our generation is fast losing this godly attitude. This is civilization in the reverse!
Let us all live the attitude we want to see in others. May our generation bring honour to the name of the Lord.

Prayer points
1. Father, please, let my attitude draw people to You and not away from You, in Jesus’ name.
2. Father, please let me be a light to my world and an example of a good attitude in Jesus’ name.

Today’s declarations
1. I am conscious not to lose the good attitude from my childhood to civilization.
2. I will not allow my exaltation or authority to erase my attitudes.
