Text: Exodus 12:7-13
Memory verse:
“Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.” Exodus 12:13
The Lord’s body (bread) is for our healing and His blood (wine) is for our forgiveness. “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins …” (Eph 1:7). This is repeated in Col 1:14. Jesus shed His blood for the forgiveness of our sins (Lev 17:11). Forgiveness is our redemptive benefit. We have been forgiven and not that ‘we will be forgiven’. We only need to believe and receive it. Forgiveness was necessary for God to relate with man. Let’s illustrate it from the redemption of the Israelites as in our text today. The blood of the Passover lamb was put on the door posts and lintels of the houses (Exo 12:7-8). The blood purchased their forgiveness and kept them from divine judgment. “‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, …I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.” (Exo 12:12). Some have wondered why a righteous God would cast anyone to hell. The answer is found in this verse. His righteousness requires that He judges sin but as a demonstration of His love, He also made provision for our forgiveness by offering His Son as a ransom (Rom 5:8). What a loving God! To accept His forgiveness is to believe this. Those who do are marked with the blood and will no longer be judged. Contrarily, to reject this offer is to be without a mark of the blood and thus be exposed to the assault of the devil and to eternal judgment (John 3:18; 14:30; Gal 5:17; Rev 12:11).
The wine, thus reminds us that we are forgiven, protected from all assaults and redeemed from eternal judgment. We are blood-bought, blood-sealed and blood-covered! Hallelujah
