Text: Exodus 12:1 – 13
Memory verse:
“Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”
Luke 22:20 NKJV
Many people see the Holy Communion as a mere religious ritual that one must participate in. No, it is not a ritual, a symbol alone, or a religious habit. Rather, it is a covenant act with spiritual power, rooted in the Passover and fulfilled in Christ.
Jesus is called our Passover. “For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.” (1 Cor 5:7). You cannot understand the mystery of the Communion without referencing the Old Testament where the Passover first took place. There, God required each household of the children of Israel to get a lamb without blemish, slay, eat the flesh, and apply the blood on the door posts and lintels of their houses.(Exod. 12:3, 5, 7).
The last supper of Jesus was a Passover meal. He deliberately instituted the Holy Communion during the Passover night to show to us that He is the true Passover Lamb, who was sacrificed. Jesus is “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” (Rev 13:8).
He fulfilled the requirement for the choice of a Passover lamb. He was a Lamb without blemish. He was sinless. We were redeemed “…with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (I Pet 1:19).
The result was that judgment passed over every house where the blood was found (Exod 12:13). While in all the Egyptians’ houses where no lamb was slain and no blood was applied, there was judgement, with the death of all the first born. The Passover was a covenant act that invoked the covenant of divine exemption on everyone who believed, ate the lamb, and applied the blood.
The Passover lamb was just a shadow of the true Lamb, who is Jesus. He instituted the new covenant in His blood (Luke 22:20). At this time, the lamb was no longer on the table; The Lamb was at the table. For centuries after the first Passover feast, Israel placed a lamb on the table during Passover. That lamb was a symbol, a shadow, and a temporary substitute. However, at the Last Supper, when Jesus instituted the Holy Communion, there was no animal lamb mentioned, nor was it on the table because the true Lamb was present in person. “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29).
Friends, the Holy Communion is a mystery meal that God has provided for His children to activate the covenant of supernatural living.
Prayer points
1. Father, thank You for giving Jesus to be my Passover Lamb and to take my judgement; let me always take the Communion with faith, not as a religious ritual, in Jesus’ name.
2. By the blood covenant, let every arrow of spiritual and physical death and destruction pass over me and my household in this year, in Jesus’ name.
Today’s declarations
1. I do not participate in the Holy Communion as a religious ritual, but by faith; it’s my covenant meal to activate the covenant of supernatural living.
2. I apply the blood of Jesus on all my spiritual and physical doorposts and lintels; I escape all deaths this year, for they will pass over me.
