Text: Hebrews 10:1-4
Memory verse:
“by so much more, Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.”
Hebrews 7:22 NKJV
Imagine waiting for a letter, and then the person who wrote it shows up.
Do you need to read the letter anymore or in haste? You will, rather, listen to the person.
While we review the glory of the first Passover, we must not forget that it is still far inferior to the last Passover, where Jesus became the Lamb at the table, not the lamb on the table.
In the first Passover, the lamb was slain and the people ate the lamb but at the Last Supper, the Lamb sat with them at the table and willingly offered Himself as “an offering and a sacrifice to God …” (Eph 5:2). The Lamb was not slain against His will.
Under the first covenant, the lamb died and stayed dead. The blood was applied, and deliverance occurred, but the lamb had no ongoing role. So, sacrifices were repeated and methods rehearsed (Heb 10:1). The lamb could not intercede, speak, enforce promises, and sustain freedom. However, under the new covenant, the Lamb died and rose again. Because the Lamb is alive, He personally enforces the covenant. Jesus is described as a Lamb slain but standing (Rev 5:6).
And because He is living, Jesus is the guarantor of the new covenant. He lives forever to intercede for us, and He personally ensures the covenant’s execution (Heb 7:22, 25). A will is powerless if no executor enforces it. Jesus is both the Sacrifice and the Executor. Hallelujah!
Therefore, when we take communion, we are not appealing to a past event only but engaging a living Mediator. We come “to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things …” (Heb 12:24). The blood still speaks, still enforces, still implements, and still overrules verdicts, decrees, judgements, and accusations.
“Because I live, you also will live.” (I Cor 10:16; John 14:19). During communion, we are not just remembering a night of great deliverance but participating in a living relationship. It is the cup of blessing that we bless, not which was blessed!
Friends, the Communion is far more powerful because the covenant is guaranteed by an Executor who is alive, present, and powerful. He is the Lamb who died and now speaks, not silent, and who delivers continuously, not once. The Holy Communion connects us to a living covenant.
Prayer points
1. Father, thank You that Jesus, my Passover Lamb lives; so, let the communion table remain a table of victory, healing, restoration, and favour for me, in Jesus’ name.
2. O Lamb of God, stand and judge every oppressor contending with my destiny; let the blood overrule every blood-speaking from my foundation or past, in Jesus’ name.
Today’s declarations
1. My covenant is alive because my Sacrifice is alive; I am not negotiating my freedom — it is covenant-enforced.
2. Communion is working life, strength, and victory in me; the Lamb stands on my behalf. Therefore, I stand in victory.
