Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
Memory verse: “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” I Thessalonians 5:24 NKJV
Do you know that God is more interested in your eternal salvation than you even are? Some believers manifest attitude that portray God like Pharaoh’s task master who demanded that the Israelites must meet their daily quota of bricks without providing the resources to produce them! (Exo 5:16). No, if God places any demand on you, He will give the raw materials needed and also supply the strength to carry it out. When we focus on ourselves and our weaknesses, we will experience a sense of hopelessness and despair. But if we focus on God and the strength He provides, we will experience a sense of hope and faith as we work to meet His demands.
This is the encouragement which Paul gives in today’s text. This scripture is a conclusion of the charge which he gave from the beginning of the chapter. He started by warning the new believers to watch and be sober lest the coming of the Lord come to them as a thief in the night (1 Thes 5:1-11). Thereafter, he charged them to pursue godly living, listing habits required for the salvation and the holy life which God had called us to (1 Thes 5:9;4:7).
This is the point. As, a believer, you have the incredible privilege of living extraordinary Christian life because God’s faithfulness establishes your faith. Even though, God sets the Christian mark or ‘daily quota’, yet you are not left alone to work it out. He who calls you to such a godly and holy living will also provide the grace and strength you need to live it.
He who calls you is faithful to keep His promises to you. Without God’s faithfulness, you are helpless to live the holy and victorious life. He who calls you is faithful to help you live above temptations (1 Cor 10:13). Even, when you yield to the flesh instead of the spirit and fall into sin, He is still faithful to forgive and restore you (1 John 1:9). His faithfulness does not make Him give up on you in your unfaithfulness (2 Tim 2:13). Hear this: “God, who got you started in this spiritual adventure, shares with us the life of His Son and our Master Jesus. He will never give up on you. Never forget that.” (1 Cor 1:9 MSG). Hallelujah!
Friends, God has promised to equip us to lead godly lives and transform us into the image of Christ. Don’t focus on yourself and your ability to live His calling. Rather, daily cling to the Lord for help and be assured that, you are not alone. He didn’t call you to abandon you to figure things out in your own strength. When He calls, He equips. When He calls, He enables! Glory!
