Text: Ephesians 6:5-9
Memory verse:
”with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men,“
Ephesians 6:7 NKJV
Serving God with our time is a life of total dedication to God. Every second must be lived in the consciousness of Him. His glory must be the motivation and the goal of everything we do. His will must always supersede ours, and His pleasure must be our life’s pursuit. Even our thoughts must be saturated with His thoughts. Serving God is to be completely sold out to God. Therefore, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.“ (I Cor 10:31).
Do you know that your work can be a tool for serving God? The Hebrew word “avodah” is the same root word for “work” and “worship. That is, God sees our work as our worship. Joseph served God as he served Potiphar, his master. Conscious of this, he refused to yield to the pressure of Potiphar’s wife to sin against Him.”… How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?“ (Gen 39:9).
Likewise, the three Hebrew men, even while being captives in a foreign land, with no place of worship, continued to serve God as they served their master faithfully and sincerely, while they also maintained their integrity (Dan 3:18). What about Daniel? His dedication to his job, his diligence, and above all, his faithfulness, stood out that the other administrators could not lay a charge against him except in connection with the law of his God. ”Then these men said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.” (Daniel 6:5).
What about Ruth? She served God as she served her husband while he was alive and her mother-in-law. She was loyal, loving, and hardworking (Ruth 1:8; 2:11).
Work is also ministry, which means service. Thus, you serve God and humanity, when you are faithful, diligent, dedicated, hardworking, loyal and demonstrate good work ethic on your job, irrespective of whether your employer is a believer or not (Eph 6:7). Serve cheerfully, wholeheartedly, enthusiastically, and gladly.
Work is also a calling. The Latin root word for “vocation” is “vocare”, meaning, to call.
Friends, you don’t serve God only when you are at church. Whether at home, school, or at work, in relating with your loved ones or with the heathen, your work is your calling and your service to God.
