Text: 1 Samuel 28:5-15
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the Lord.” Amos 8:11
Famine can either be economic or spiritual or of both. Spiritual famine is a state of spiritual hunger due to failure to experience the presence and joy of God. The word of God is designed to nourish you and satisfy you. (Jer 15:16). The presence of God is meant to give you joy (Psa 65:11). However, when you begin to experience hunger and emptiness with the word or when you feel so dry and bored in God’s presence, it’s an indication of spiritual famine.
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, And from north to east; They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, But shall not find it.” (Amos 8:11-12).
Unlike, economic famine, spiritual famine may not be easily noticed. Rather than being established, the person wanders all over, from church to church, program to program, mountain to mountain to seek for what doesn’t satisfy. Rather than confronting the problem, they seek for spiritual ‘fast food’ snacks and junks (Isa 55:2). While wandering all over, they result to cheap, easy and adulterated word. They seek for teachers who will just tell them what their itching ears want to hear. During closed heavens, strength to run the Christian race is in short supply, so, agonizers turn to organizers, tears to fears and passion to fashion. Rather, than shaking the place with agonizing prayer, they take the place by rich ‘payers’. Instead of waiting for a message, they employ methods.
According to our text today, King Saul experienced all heavens’ communication channels shut. Rather than humbling himself and genuinely repenting, he sought a word from hell’s channel, through a familiar spirit!
Friends, just as people starve during economic famine and become prone to diseases, the soul starves and the spirit gets lean during spiritual famine, predisposing the person to satanic attacks and all forms of spiritual diseases. May your heavens never be shut in Jesus name.
1.Father, please, forgive and restore the joy of salvation of all Your children who are experiencing spiritual famine now in Jesus name.
2.Father, please, let my heavens remain open and let not Your word be scarce in my life in Jesus name.
1.Since spiritual famine is a time of separation from the the true Helper and Sustainer, the sufferer becomes an easy prey to the devil.
2.Starving in the midst of the word and loss of joy in God’s presence are indicators of spiritual famine.
