Text: Genesis 19:27-29
Memory verse:
“Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.” Proverbs 8:34
Can you just imagine how dangerous it will be for aircrafts to fly continuously without returning for regular checks? Thus, as a routine, upon arrival, a comprehensive check is made, including checks for lightning strikes, bird strikes, engine fan damage, hydraulic and fuel leaks. In fact, the maintenance engineers look for anything that can be wrong with the aircraft, even clogged toilets and Wi-Fi. This maintenance is important to keep the aircraft flying and safely during the daytime. Then, every night when the aircraft lays over, even more routine maintenance and repairs are done. The point is this, aircrafts need ground time to ensure safety in the air!
This is also applicable to ships.
In fact, there’s an old navy rule which says, “When ships readjust their compass, they drop anchor in a quiet spot”.
What about music? It is well known that any string instrument can go out of tune with much use. The constant striking of the strings may loosen them and will therefore require that they be adjusted, else they will produce unpleasant sounds. Therefore, to have harmonious sound, the strings must be fixed.
Likewise, as the aircraft can’t continue to fly safely in the air without ground time, the ship can’t sail successfully on the sea without returning to the quiet spot and the violin can’t give harmonious sound for the ears without regular retuning, neither can you continue to fulfill God’s purpose in life without returning every morning for regular maintenance and refilling. Don’t be too engulfed in busyness that you evade your ground time for routine checks and refueling. Don’t readjust on the high sea of the busy day without first returning to your quiet spot. Don’t keep striking the strings of legitimate work without stopping regularly to retune.
Early morning quiet time is God’s wisdom for your safety, guidance and relevance in service. Abraham followed that path and remained strong to the end. “And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.”
(Gen 19:27). The scriptures also attest that God spoke with Moses face to face (Exo 33:11).
Friends, they are wise who start their day in private devotion with God. Let it be your delight and not drudgery, a relationship and not a routine.
Prayer points
1. Father, please, deliver me from the foolishness of attempting to enter into a new day without my private communion with You in Jesus name.
2. Father, please, cause me to see my quiet time as a delight and not drudgery in Jesus name.
Today’s declarations
1. I don’t grow out of relevance and usefulness because I start my day regularly with the Lord.
2. I can’t be lost in the sea of life as long as I regularly return to the quiet spot for my compass readjustment.
