Text: 1 Timothy 6:6-10
Memory verse:
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (I Timothy 6:10)
A common manifestation of failed leadership is financial recklessness. Teaching children early on money handling will prepare them for future leadership.
They should be taught to place their trust on God and not on money. This is what our memory verse refers to as the love of money and not the need of money. People who love money are greedy. They amass wealth and are selfish. They love gold more than God and have more allegiance to the god of mammon than the Almighty God (Matt 6:24). We have heard of positional leaders embezzling monies they would never need throughout their lifetime. They steal money to buy things they would never need just to impress others. Children should be taught how to be content in their godliness.
They should also be taught to honour their covenant obligations in order to draw the covenant blessings. These include tithing, offering and giving. Greedy people eat both their 90% share given by God and the tithe (10% ) share which God reserves for Himself. Faithful tithing is the first sign of victory over greediness. Children who have been trained in tithing will not be tempted to steal public funds. Encourage them to always tithe all money gifts they receive.
Greedy people think only about themselves whereas generous and kind people think of how to touch other peoples’ lives. Great leaders are kind. People rejoice under them while citizens groan under greedy leaders (Prov 29:2). Great leaders are self-sacrificing. They know the law of sowing and reaping, that the harvest is usually bigger than the seed sown (Prov 11:24; 2 Cor 9:6). Rather than converting public funds for their private use, they sow it in form of relief, peace, prosperity and security and they receive the reward of unending loyalty from the citizens.
May our children not be caught by the spirit of mammon in Jesus name.
