Text: Genesis 25:29-34
Memory verse:
“And put a knife to your throat If you are a man given to appetite.”
Proverbs 23:2
Aside from other benefits of fasting, it is a spiritual training of self-discipline. “For my own part, I put on sackcloth when they were ill, and disciplined myself with fasting “ (Psa 35:13). Fasting restrains the flesh (the devil’s instrument of indiscipline) and strengthens the spirit to rule the flesh. “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” (I Corin 9:27).
In my walk with God, I have seen how the devil had used uncontrolled appetite to capture many beautiful destinies. We also have examples in the scriptures. Esau lost his birthright through food (Gen 25:31-32). What about Jehoshaphat who was lured into evil partnership and almost lost his life? (2 Kings 18:2-3). Yet, we see men like Daniel and David who disciplined themselves in the midst of abundant delicacies (Psa 141:4; Dan 1:8). Here is an ancient counsel which is still relevant for our time. “When you sit down to eat with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you; And put a knife to your throat If you are a man given to appetite. Do not desire his delicacies, For they are deceptive food.” (Prov 23:1-3).
Friends, don’t leave your city, that is, your life, health, family, destiny or ministry open and defenseless. How can the watchmen keep the city when the city walls are broken down? A man that has no self-control has no future because his life is open to the attack of the enemy at any time. What an insecure life! Engage the Holy Spirit to train you in self-control through fasting. Yes, the training may not be fun, but it will be worth it at the end!
