Text: Matthew 14:22-33
Memory verse:
“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 NKJV
A computer programmer may write a program consisting of all the steps that a customer must follow for the computer to process and generate a receipt. The rules must be followed any time the customer initiates a transaction. The programmer, can however choose to write a script that will bypass all these requirements.
This is a simple illustration of how miracles happen. God created the world and established laws to guide how it works. God said to Job, “Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth?” (Job 38:33 NLT).
A miracle is not God contradicting Himself or violating His laws. It’s not God canceling His rules that guide the universe. It’s God suspending a law for a moment to establish His desire and thereafter restoring the law. Like the programmer, God established the rules that guide our world, yet He has a written script or back door code to bypass the normal procedure in order to achieve His desired result at that moment. When God decides to do something, who can stop Him? “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has spoken— who can change His plans? When His hand is raised, who can stop Him?” (Isa 14:27 NLT).
According to our text, Peter saw someone walking on the water and thought it was a ghost. Jesus walked on the water because the Creator can’t be subject to the laws He created. He is above them and controls them. God also walks on the wings of the wind and treads on the waves of the sea (Psa 104: 3; Job 9:8). So, when Peter stepped out into the water by faith according to the word of the Lord, there was a divine intervention that suspended the law of gravity, which would have made him sink. And as long as he kept walking in faith and focusing on Jesus, the law remained suspended, and he walked on the water. However, when he broke the connection and began to look at the boisterous wind, the suspension was reversed, and he began to sink. Then, when he cried out, the Lord lifted him up, and together, they walked on the water again and into the boat. Since he reconnected to the Creator, the suspension order was enforced again, and he couldn’t sink.
Friends, God still performs miracles. Stretch out your faith and remain connected to the One who has the power to suspend the laws of nature. Hallelujah!
