THE OLD IN THE NEW

THE OLD IN THE NEW

Text: 1 Corinthians 10: 6-11
Memory verse:
“Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.” Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭11‬

The Bible is not a story book but God’s revelation for our time. It is not just the story of the past but a map of the past, drawn from the heart of God’s revelation, to be useful to the modern traveller.
Let’s see few reasons for the relevance of the Old Testament in our times today.
Firstly, it is written for our learning. Knowledge is the basis of wisdom. Knowledge answers to many questions of life. The Bible is a tool for true learning. There are so many people in the church today who have learnt so much about sports, politics, entertainments and everything but the Bible. The real illiterate is one who has gained various knowledge but has no knowledge of the word of God.
“For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.”
‭‭(Rom‬ ‭15‬:‭4).
The word of God is also given for our warning so we won’t share in the same judgment the people of the past had. As the common saying, “To be forewarned is to be forearmed”. It is not God’s will that we miss out of God’s rest and God’s best like some of our forefathers (Heb 3:12; 4:11). God won’t use a standard for us today which is different from what He used in the past.
“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” (‭‭I Cor‬ ‭10‬:‭11).
Thirdly, to let you know that the promises of the past are not obsolete today. You hear some ignorant folks saying, “That promise is for the Old Testament and not for us today”. No, they are applicable for you and our time but all effective in Jesus Christ. All the promises of God revealed in His covenant names are compounded in one name, Jesus. The seven fold blessing of Abraham are effective in Jesus.
“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”
‭‭(II Cor‬ ‭1‬:‭20‬).
Friends, are you in Christ? These promises are only accessible by faith in Christ Jesus.

Prayer points
1. Father, please, help me to be committed to learning through Your word in Jesus name.
2. Father, I submit myself to the discipline and warning of Your word, lest I miss out of Your rest and Your best for me in Jesus name.

Today’s declarations
1. I access all the promises of old in the word of God through the name of Jesus.
2. The word of God is for my learning and warning to make me wise and to keep me from the errors of the people of old.
