Text: Philippians 4:8-9
Memory text:
“and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,”
Ephesians 4:23 NKJV
The Bible is meant to transform us and not just to inform us. It changes our reasoning and our thinking. The more we meditate on the Scripture, the more our reasoning reflects the mind of Christ. God’s goal is that we grow up to become like Christ.
What is a renewed mind? It is a mind that has been totally replaced with the mind of Christ. It is a mind that is completely free of the old attitude. A renewed mind sees life through the lens of God’s wisdom, not human understanding.
Why do you need to renew your mind? When you got saved, it was your spirit that was saved. The spirit was saved instantly the moment you confessed Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. God gave you a new spirit.“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (II Cor 5:17). Did you notice the tense used here? Anyone who is in Christ is a new creature, and not that he WILL be a new creature. Ephesians 2:8 says, “we were saved by grace, and not we will be saved by grace.” Salvation is a gift you received immediately you accepted Christ. You immediately got transformed from death to life or from a sinner to a saint.
However, while your spirit got saved or rescued instantly, your mind was not. The intention of the Saviour is that the new spirit or saved spirit, which is also called the new man in you will grow stronger by feeding on the Word of God (1 Peter 2:2; Rom 10:17). As it grows, it will gradually win, save, or control the mind (Luke 21:19).
How does this happen? Knowing what is good, acceptable and perfect will of God through the light of the knowledge of God’s Word, the saved spirit exert its influence on the mind by deleting the contrary and installing the right things. In other words, it reprograms your minds, helping you to think, reason, and live in a way that reflects God’s truth (Rom 12:1-2; Eph 4:23; Phil 4:8). Friends, as you consistently read, meditate, and apply the Word, your spirit will grow stronger, and your mind will be renewed to think and reason like Christ and to believe the Word of God.
