Text: John 17:14-19
Memory text:
“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.”
John 15:3 NKJV
Sanctification is to set apart from sin and to be made holy. This is necessary for man to relate with God, who is holy and can not stand sin. Thus, God first sanctified us when we were saved. “By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (Heb 10:10). You have been sanctified. You have been made holy. You are no longer a sinner. Throw away that slavery mentality of sin and false humility. He said you, “.. have been sanctified”. Hallelujah!
However, because you are still in the world drenched in sin, you need to be daily sanctified so you don’t become contaminated or slip back into your former state. Thus, sanctification becomes an ongoing process as long as you are in the world. “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” (Heb 10:14). Did you notice the tense used here? “…being sanctified.” Sanctification is not a one-time affair but a continuous process.
The Word of God is God’s tool of sanctification. As darkness can not overpower light, no man who lives by the Word can be corrupted by the world. This is what Jesus said here. “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one…Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:15, 17). The Word of God purifies and keeps us from the lies in the world by revealing truth, correcting our errors, and guiding us in righteousness (John 15:3). The Word of God also purifies our thoughts, desires, and actions, just as water cleanses the body (Eph 5:26).
The Word of God is our divine immunity against all sin viruses. It is not possible for the thought of sin to stay in the heart enriched with the Word. The more we abound in the Word, the more we are strengthened to resist sin and grow in holiness “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.” (Psa 119:11).
If God has sanctified us and made us holy, our role is to yield daily to Him by obeying the Word. If we were saved by the Word of Truth, we would be sanctified by the Word of Truth (1 Pet 1:22-23; Eph 1:13).
Friends, like D.L. Moody said, “The Bible was not given for our information, but for our transformation.”, so read, study, meditate, and commit to heart. The Word will empower, sanctify, preserve, and transform you. Amen!
