Text: Genesis 39:2-9
Memory verse:
“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.”
Luke 16:10
William Colgate decided to seek for a means of living to help his poor family. His father prayed for him and said, “…give your heart to Christ, pay the Lord all that belongs to Him .. I’m certain you’ll be a prosperous and rich man.’ He got employed with Colgate Palmolive company and he tithed from his first dollar as an employee and gradually increased his tithe from 10% until he started giving all his income. He was made a partner and eventually became the owner.
Let’s learn about tithing from this unlikely passage. God’s presence with Joseph made him a success (Gen 39:2). Do you realize that whatever you have today is His blessing? Potiphar had put all things under Joseph’s control except his wife and Joseph knew that well. Likewise, God allows you to keep for yourself 90% of what He has blessed you with but to give only 10% back to Him. Joseph refused the temptation to tamper with the 10%(Potiphar’s wife), counting it as gross unfaithfulness to his master and sin against God. “How could I violate this trust and sin against God” (Gen 39:9 MSG). It is a violation of trust! It is wickedness and a sin!
Friends, the Lord graciously entrusts to us His treasures, but of the tenth He says: “This is Mine”. So, man is to return to God a faithful tithe of all his substance. Faithfulness is required in this contract and it is proved in little things. He who can’t be faithful in tithing little income won’t with millions, for it’s the same faith that is required to pay both the tithe of 1 dollar and of 1 million dollars. Faithfulness is required, not in part, but in all. Abram gave the tithe of all and God calls us to bring all the tithes” (Gen 14:20; Mal 3:10). Abram gave the tithes of all to be blessed in all things (Gen 24:1). Are you faithful in tithing? Are you faithful in tithing all?
Prayer points
1. Father, please help me never to yield to the temptation and pressure to be unfaithful in my tithing and to sin against You in Jesus name.
2. Father, help me to be faithful in tithing all so I can draw all that You have blessed me with in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
Today’s declarations
1. As a small leak can sink a great ship, so little unfaithfulness in tithing can sink my expectations.
2. My tithe is not a gift I bestow to God but God’s rightful due and a debt I discharge.
