Text: Psalm 91:1- 13
Memory verse:
”You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.“
Psalms 91:13 NKJV
Satan has no more authority over you except the authority you give him out of ignorance. The devil is a toothless bulldog whose teeth and claws have been removed. He has been completely disarmed and stripped of his authority to harm you.
He who is above is above all. We have been raised far higher than satan and his fallen angels, that is, the demons we are contending with (Eph 6:12).
You see, satan is the ruler of the darkness of this world, and he and his demons reside in the atmospheric heavens. This realm is far below the heaven where God dwells, and we are seated with Jesus on the right hand of God. Thus, we are above him and have authority over him.
Now, let’s study our memory text. Did you notice that the psalmist mentioned lions and snakes twice in this scripture? Both cobras and serpents are snakes. This repetition is to emphasize the point. The word for cobra means a venomous serpent, and the word for serpent also means dragon or sea monster.
Satan is not a lion, but he is called a lion here because he represents forces as strong, as fierce and intimidating as a lion. The ‘lion’ here represents all open and violent forces and all challenges that are intimidating and starring at you (1 Pet 5:8). The cobra or adder represents all secret, slippery, and malignant foes. The young lion represents the ‘lion’ at the height of its strength while the serpent or dragon represents the most dreadful form of snake; dangerous sea monsters or serpents.
Did you notice that he also used tread and trample, both with similar meanings? It means to walk on or exercise authority over all these foes. The metaphor of ‘treading under foot’ was an ancient practice, where conquered enemies lie prostrate, and the conquerors then place a foot upon them to mark the completeness of the subjection.
This is the point. The believers have complete authority over satanic powers in their different levels. The Passion Translation puts it like this, “You’ll even walk unharmed among the fiercest powers of darkness, trampling every one of them beneath your feet!”
Friends, you are above all, and satan and his demons are under your feet. Arise, take your authority, and tread upon them. Hallelujah!
