Text: Genesis 22:10-17
Memory verse:
“And he said: “Blessed be the Lord, The God of Shem, And may Canaan be his servant.”
Genesis 9:26 NKJV
As soon as the vacancy for a deputy governor opened up in a state, pressure started flowing in from different quarters for the position. Heavy weight politicians used their influence to bring up their candidates. However, the governor decided to choose and sponsor a neutral candidate who didn’t even apply nor showed any visible interest. His reason for his choice was that this candidate has an antecedent of loyalty, not only to him but with everyone he had worked with in the past. So, among the contestants for the position, some applied and begged while one was just invited to take over the position.
Likewise, there are two types of blessings – solicited, that is, that which you receive by asking or begging for and the unsolicited. Jacob and Jabez prayed specifically that God) would bless them(Gen 32:26; 1 Chro 4:10), Esau wept to ask for one blessing from his father, after Jacob outsmarted him (Gen 27:38).
However, the most mentioned type of blessing in the Bible is the unsolicited blessing. This is the blessing that is bestowed, not by asking but by provoking. Attitude is the key factor here. Abram didn’t ask for a blessing before God pronounced a generational blessing on him. “and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.” (Gen 22:16-17).
He passionately loved, obeyed, and trusted the Lord.
Joseph didn’t deceive or manipulate his father to get the blessing of Reuben, the first born. He simply honoured his father.
What about Shem and Japheth, who covered their father’s nakedness, honouring him in his fall? What about Caleb, whose loyalty singled him out among the other leaders? What about Phinehas, whose righteous judgment against sin turned back the wrath of God, ended the plague and thus provoked the blessing of generational priesthood? What about Solomon who received an open cheque blessing through an unusual offering?
Friends, while God wants you to ask for blessings, your attitude can bring unimaginable blessings to you and your generation without soliciting for it. May your attitude be your blessing magnet in Jesus’ name.
Prayer points
1. Father, please help me to develop an attitude that will always provoke Your blessings anytime, in Jesus’ name.
2. Father, help me to passionately love and honour You in all I do, in Jesus’ name.
Today’s declarations
1. As I pray for God’s blessings, I also pay attention to my attitude.
2. Nothing provokes God’s blessings as much as loving and honouring Him.
