Text: Ephesians 4:25-32
Memory verse:
“And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:24 NKJV
To walk in the Spirit is to live daily by the dictates, leading and dominating influence of the Holy Spirit. Since all believers have the indwelling Spirit of Christ, we are also led by the same Spirit (Rom 8:14). In fact, being led by the Spirit is proof of God’s sonship. In order words, unbelievers can never be led by the Spirit since they don’t have the indwelling Spirit of Christ. Therefore, if we live in the Spirit and are led by the Spirit, it is just normal that we should also walk, day by day, in the Spirit. This means that it is unnatural for a believer to walk contrarily.
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Gal 5:25).
The GNT says “The Spirit has given us life; he must also control our lives”.
This is the point. Everyone who is genuinely born again is led by the Spirit, “…for as many as are led”. The problem, therefore, is that not everyone who is led by the Spirit yields to the Spirit. There are many heady, stubborn, unyielding, strong-willed, and flesh-dominating believers. They grieve the Spirit by their lifestyles as listed, though not exhaustive, in our text. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Eph 4:30).
The opposite of walking in the Spirit is walking in the flesh. Since the flesh is in perpetual opposition to the Spirit, it is always resisting and grieving Him. However, the answer to this problem is to live a crucified life daily. As a believer, you are crucified with Christ. The flesh, that is, our fallen nature under the power of sin, was nailed with Christ on the cross, buried with Him and raised into a new life in Christ. This is the truth, that is, the flesh and sin should no longer rule over you. But this truth can not be a reality in you until you believe it, receive it, and engage it. You must enforce this truth in your mind. “In the same way you are to think of yourselves as dead, so far as sin is concerned, but living in fellowship with God through Christ Jesus.” (Rom 6:11). ‘…you are to think’ – did you get that?
Friends, to walk in the Spirit is never to give room for the flesh to fulfill its passions and desires. Thank God that through the sacrifice of Christ, your victory over the flesh has been purchased, but this must be enforced in reality, and it must start in your mind. Praise God!
