WALKING IN THE SPIRIT 6

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT 6

Text: Colossians 2:16-23
Memory verse:
“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,” Colossians‬ ‭2‬:‭6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
‭‭
Walking in the Spirit is simply the metaphor for describing what it means to live as a Christian.
To walk in the Spirit is to live according to the word of God, not according to traditions, religious systems, worldly systems, human philosophies or ideologies. “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Col.‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬).‬‬ Practicing the word of God outside Christ is a practice of mere religion, for Christ is the perfection of the law (Rom 10:4). While no part of the Bible is obsolete, yet some are the shadows and prophesies of things to come but which already have their fulfillment in Christ. Thus, Jesus didn’t come to destroy the law but to fulfill it. For example, women were regarded as unclean during their monthly cycle and were cut off from God’s presence. Today, through the sacrifice of Christ, all things have been made clean before Him and in Him, there is no male nor female. To walk in the Spirit is therefore to walk in Christ.
To walk in the Spirit is also to set your mind on the things of the Spirit, instead of the things of the flesh (Rom 8:5). We all have our mindsets. You need to empty your mindset and fill it with the mindset of Christ, that is, the things of the Spirit. Your mindset is your way of thinking which has been influenced and fixed as a result of your upbringing, education, religious background, friendships, exposure and so forth. Your mindset controls your behaviour and until it is changed, it will hinder your walk in the Spirit and move you out of the will of God. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Rom‬ ‭12‬:‭2‬ ‭NLT‬‬).
How do you renew your mind or your thinking? By daily filling it with the thoughts of the Spirit, that is, the word of God. These include hearing, reading, studying, meditating, memorizing the scriptures; sharing fellowship more with believers and minimizing your time with ungodly associations; listening to testimonies and spiritual songs and so forth (Psa 119:11; Mal 3:16; 1 Cor 15:33).
Friends, to walk in the Spirit is to walk in Christ and to set your mind on the things of the Spirit.
