Text: 2 Chronicles 13:1-18
Memory text:
“They will fight against you, But they shall not prevail against you. For I am with you,” says the Lord, “to deliver you.”” Jeremiah 1:19 NKJV
There are many factors that can give an army a winning edge in battle. These include the type of weapon available, the skill of the soldiers, experience and warfare strategies of the army, the morale and courage of the army, the size of the army, the intelligence gathering, and so forth. However, more critical than all these factors is the capability of your ally. A strong ally will cover up for any inadequacies of an army.
According to our text, even though Jeroboam, the king of Israel, had twice the army of Judah, that is, 800 to 400, yet Abijah, the king of Judah, was unmoved by the number. He recognized the eternal covenant between Yahweh and David, which was ratified with the covenant of salt (2 Chron 13:5). Thus, Abijah was well assured that God was with him and the people of Judah to fight against Jeroboam and the people of Israel. He recognized the Almighty God as their Leader and Ally in the battle. He knew that God was on their side and no one could defeat them, irrespective of their capabilities. By this, he was too sure that Jeroboam and the people of Israel would be defeated. “That’s why God is on our side and will lead us into battle when the priests sound the signal on the trumpets. It’s no use, Israelites. You might as well give up. There’s no way you can defeat the LORD, the God your ancestors worshiped.”” (II Chron 13:12 CEV).
And that was it. Jeroboam adopted a surprise warfare tactic against Abijah and Judah by ambushing them, yet it availed to nothing because their Ally supernaturally helped them. Thus, Judah prevailed against Israel.
God has covenanted with His children to be their greatest Ally in battle. His name is Jehovah Nissi, meaning the Lord our banner (Exo 17:15). This means, ‘The Lord is my banner of victory’. He is the Leader who leads us into battle, and we are to rally around Him as an army gathers around its banner.
This is what David meant here, “They surrounded me like bees; They were quenched like a fire of thorns; For in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.” (Psa 118:12).
Friends, if you are a covenant child, the Lord is your banner of victory in the battles of life. Don’t fear, for the Lord is with you. Don’t bother about who is against you, their number, and their capabilities, as long as the Almighty is your Ally, your victory at last is thrice guaranteed! Hallelujah!
