Text: Acts 19:11-16
Memory verse:
“Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”
Acts 19:16 NKJV
Contrary to what some people believe, the ability to deal with demonic powers is not reserved for some special ministers. No one is called to specialize in dealing with demonic powers. Phillip, whom God used mightily to cast out unclean spirits from many people in Samaria was not among the apostles, nor was he in the five-fold ministry but a ‘table waiter’ in the early church! (Acts 6:1-6; 8:6-7).
Yes, Jesus first gave His disciples the power to cast out unclean spirits as He sent them out to preach (Matt 10:1).
He also extended the same delegated authority to all believers.
All believers are called and authorized to deal with demons. This is what Jesus says, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; ..;” (Mark 16:17).
Did you notice those to whom Jesus directed His speech? …“And these signs will follow those who believe…”. The primary qualification is ‘to believe’. It is not a special gifting to a selected few but God’s signature on the gospel preached by those who believe. Those who believe and not those who have a theological certificate or those who have been ordained by the church. It is not to the bishop or to the General Overseer but to everyone who has experienced genuine salvation of Christ. If you are a believer, demons will bow to your authority. Hallelujah!
It is dangerous for an unbeliever or anyone who has no genuine salvation to attempt to exercise authority on demons. According to our text, the sons of Sceva were attacked and disgraced when they attempted to act the faith they didn’t have and to use the authority they weren’t given. “And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”” (Acts 19:15).
As a believer, and even though you have been given authority over the devil, you still need to be properly instructed and prepared before entering into this ministry. Jesus appointed the twelve but instructed them before sending them out (Mark 3:14).
Like the operation of other ministry gifts, faith is required in anyone who wants to deal with demons. The power of God doesn’t answer to unbelief and doubts (Matt 13:58; 17:19-20).
Friends, if you are a child of God, you have God’s authority to cast out and deal with devils. Hallelujah!
