Text: John 11:33-47
Memory verse:
“Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things Jesus did believed in Him.”
John 11:45 NKJV
God is known as the God of miracles and awesome wonders. His ability to perform miracles is one of the qualities that proves His divinity.
According to our text, the raising of Lazarus from the dead blew the mind of everyone. No one, especially the Jews, ever believed that anyone could still raise a four-day dead from the grave! Thus, the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus made a number of the Jews believe in Jesus as their Messiah. Lazarus thus became a walking billboard proclaiming Jesus’ power over death.
God does miracles to show to everyone that He is God, and He does as He pleases. He does not need anyone’s approval to do what He wants, and no one can stop Him. He is the Most High, that is, He is higher than any other, be it in the heavens or on the earth. He can’t be questioned on whom He chooses to visit with His miracle. “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.” (Psa 115:3).
God also performs miracles to prove to the world that He rules in the affairs of men. The ruler of any kingdom has the final say on the matters of his domain. Now, the Almighty is the Ruler-God, who takes the final decision on the affairs of man. He decides whether any decision will fly or not. What is the embargo that the world has placed on your conception, employment, health, academics, or your business? (Dan 4:35; Prov 16:33). They are overruled now, in Jesus’ name.
God also does miracles to prove that He is the God of all flesh and nothing is too hard for Him to do. He controls man, animals, fishes, and birds, both wild and domesticated. You can now understand why fishes in the water rushed to find a space in Peter’s net when Jesus spoke! (Jer 32:27; Luke 5:5-6).
God also performs miracles to stand as a witness so that no one will be excused at the judgment day. Even after Lazarus was raised, some Jews still didn’t believe Him but began plotting to kill Him (John 11:53). Likewise, Jesus warned the people of Capernaum that the miracles He performed among them will witness against them on the judgment day (Matt 11:23).
Friends, miracles glorify God and proclaim His power among people. May the Almighty God do a miracle in your life and glorify Himself in Jesus’ name.
