Text: Matthew 6:24
Memory text:
““No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Matthew 6:24 NKJV
Be it in lottery, casinos, sports betting, online play, dice or cards, gambling is more of a spiritual captivity than just a bad habit. Gambling is rooted in the spirit of greed, that is, the spirit of mammon. It is driven by the desire for quick wealth without labour. Mammon promises quick wealth, but only God gives lasting riches with no sorrow added (Prov 10:22).
“No one can serve two masters …You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matt 6:24). Gambling thrives on wanting what others have and the desire for “more.” God expressly commands, “You shall not covet” (Exod 20:17). Mammon is not just money; it is the demonic spirit behind greed, covetousness, and the worship of money. Covetousness is idolatry (Col 3:5; Eph 5:5) and mammon is a spirit that competes with God for our loyalty. Gambling feeds both, which is why it’s spiritually dangerous. The spirit drives its victims to bet more, promising they will get what others don’t have or get richer.
Gambling enslaves people to the love of money, the very root of all kinds of evil (1 Tim 6:10). It possesses such that victims do anything and go to any length to get money for gambling. Some people, having spent all their money, still go out to borrow. With easy access to online borrowing, they borrow from online banks, plunging into deeper debts. Some even sell valuables and family or jointly owned assets to get money for gambling, while some steal money. Some workers even obtain salary in advance.
Gambling is mammon’s trap because it feeds greed instead of contentment, enslaves its victims, and replaces diligence with laziness and God’s blessings with false hope. “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have…” (Heb 13:5).
Friends, gambling is more than entertainment or game. Rather, it’s sacrificing unknowingly on the demon altar of mammon. Gambling is not just a game of chance; it is a trap of mammon. Every coin placed on the altar of gambling is a sacrifice to mammon. Through deception, people sacrifice money, time, and peace in exchange for empty promises of fortune. You cannot serve both chance and Christ: one will rule your heart. Gamblers are servants and lovers of mammon but haters of God. Sadly, gamblers don’t play against the casino but against their own destiny!
Prayer points
1. Father, I renounce any allegiance to the spirit of mammon. I refuse to serve money, greed, or chance; or to play against my destiny. I choose You, as my only Master, in Jesus’ name.
2. Father, deliver all Your children who are in bondage to the spirit of mammon. Set them free from every addictive cycle of gambling and from the push to bet, play, or chase loss, in Jesus’ name.
Today’s declarations
1. I am delivered from every spirit of greed and covetousness. My heart is content with God’s blessings. I desire only what God has given me. I serve Jesus, and He is my one and only Master!
2. God is my provider, my sustainer, and my source of increase. My wealth comes through His blessing, not through gambling, chance, or luck. My finances bring glory to God and joy to my family.
