Text: 1 Samuel 15:18-22
Memory verse:
âBut the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.ââ
ââI Samuel⏠â15âŹ:â21⏠âNKJVâŹâŹ
Another way many believers attempt to bypass their conscience or bribe it when the conscience troubles them, is to do many good things or to get involved in many legitimate activities.
No, nothing can comfort the conscience outside complete obedience when it reproves. Until a believer obeys the voice of his conscience and follows its instructions, he canât enjoy peace nor can he please God.
No one can cover up the conscience by doing many things. No one can replace Godâs will with good deeds. Some think that their deeds are good enough to substitute for obeying Godâs instructions or even better. What a folly! For what seems to be Godâs foolishness excels human wisdom (1 Cor 1: 25). No matter what you do or how many people praise your good deeds, they are useless in Godâs sight unless they fit into His will as revealed by the intuition through the conscience. Saul brought gifts to God in an attempt to silence his conscience and to bribe God. âBut the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.ââ ââ(I Sam⏠â15âŹ:â21âŹ). Rather than submitting to God, he considered his best to be better! You see, God doesnât place value on the size of the fat or the gifts you bring to Him but your obedience.
You donât need to do any extraordinary things to serve God but to simply obey. The way to walk according to the Spirit at all times, is to humble ourselves and to follow the guidance and the corrections of our conscience. We must not make attempts to flee from the âinward linesman or judgeâ; donât escape the inner rebuke of the conscience.
Some believers also try to set aside the conscience by making quick and general confession, rather than allowing the Holy Spirit through the conscience to point out each sins. The scriptures didnât just say that Jesus overcame sin but overcame in all points (Hebrews 4:15). Dealing with each sin as the conscience brings them up will help it to do a thorough work in us.
Friends, to walk according to the Spirit and to please God, you must humble yourself and allow your conscience to open up all your sins and tell you the real condition of your entire life. No reasoning or good deeds can cover up the voice of the conscience except obedience.
Prayer points
1. Father, I refuse to hide any part of my life from You, please, work through my conscience to thoroughly examine me, in Jesusâ name.
2. Father, help me to always obey the voice of my conscience rather than attempting to cover it with good deeds, in Jesus name.
Todayâs declarations
1. My best deeds can never substitute for the obedience of the voice of my conscience.
2. I donât make a general confession but I humble myself and confess each of my sins as my conscience convicts me.
